In an effort to mix things up in the morning during arrival, and to encourage the kids to become a little more aware of our world, we started including geography challenges in the morning message. Many of the kids love it and ask to have them more often. We choose a city or country in the world, the kids use any resource in the classroom to figure it out, and they share their findings during morning meeting. Usually they gravitate into partners or small groups to solve it together. It's interesting to see which tools kids prefer: the globe, the atlases, the computer, their own background knowledge. At morning meeting, I make an effort to leave it in their hands to determine what is accurate. Students share what they think but they also have to share some evidence to back up their answers.
